What is Trauma?

Trauma is the Greek word for "wound."

There is a natural intelligence and inclination for a wound to heal — physically, mentally, emotionally, energetically, and relationally. There is always a call to heal. When that call goes unanswered, dis-ease follows.

As Bessel van der Kolk wrote in The Body Keeps the Score, trauma is a nervous system response that becomes a background program, quietly running in our subconscious until it’s addressed.

Gabor Maté offers: “Trauma is not what happens to you — it’s what happens inside of you.”

In my observation, trauma is synonymous with fear. And fear creates separation.
Trauma is the imprint of that separation — a programmed response in the nervous system and a story in the mind. It severs us from our connection to Truth, Power, and our capacity to fully be.

A traumatic event installs a program that disconnects us from our Selves — our True Nature. It fractures our ability to feel safe in who we are, make aligned choices, and live with an open heart.

To heal is to restore that connection.
With the right support — and by moving through the stages of trauma recovery, beginning with safety — we remember who we are.
